NextNav Inc. today announced the findings of The Brattle Group's economic analysis, which quantifies the value of the company's proposed terrestrial Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) backup and complement to GPS in the Lower 900 MHz band. The report estimates that a one-day global GPS outage could cost the American economy $1.6 billion, with NextNav's solution capable of preventing $663 million in losses for such an outage. The study, conducted by economists Coleman Bazelon and Paroma Sanyal, calculates the total quantified value of a GPS backup at $14.6 billion. This figure includes a $10.8 billion 'insurance policy' against GPS outages and an additional $3.8 billion from increased resiliency. The analysis also forecasts that the telecommunications, maritime, telematics, location-based services, and oil and gas sectors would benefit most from this solution. NextNav's proposal offers a solution to safeguard critical systems without relying on taxpayer funding, addressing a national security and economic imperative. The findings support NextNav's petition to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to reconfigure the Lower 900 MHz band, aiming to update legacy rules for a more resilient PNT infrastructure.
