ExxonMobil has announced plans for a 1.5 gigawatt (GW) natural gas-fired power plant designed to exclusively serve data centers. This strategic move marks the company's entry into the electricity business with a focus on high-demand digital infrastructure.
The planned power plant will incorporate carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, capable of capturing more than 90% of emissions. This integration aims to provide a lower-carbon energy solution for the rapidly growing data center industry.
CEO Darren Woods emphasized that natural gas, combined with CCS, offers a faster deployment solution for powering data hubs compared to other heavy energy sources like nuclear. This initiative leverages ExxonMobil's natural gas resources and carbon capture expertise to create a new revenue stream.
