Alcoa of Australia Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alcoa Corporation, announced on August 3, 2025, a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) with Japan Australia Gallium Associates Pty Ltd (JAGA). JAGA is a joint venture between Sojitz Corporation and Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC).

The JDA aims to explore the feasibility of a gallium project, which would be co-located at one of Alcoa’s operating alumina refineries in Western Australia. Gallium is a highly sought-after critical mineral, essential for industries such as semiconductors and defense, and has been recognized as critical by Australia, the United States, and Japan.

This opportunity could deliver additional value from Alcoa's established operations by expanding the global supply of gallium, an existing by-product of the alumina refining process. The JDA partners are targeting a final investment decision by the end of 2025 and to begin production in 2026, with Alcoa's participation not expected to have a material financial impact on the company.
