American Airlines announced that it has added additional capacity to several Caribbean routes, including San Juan, Puerto Rico; Aruba; the U.S. and British Virgin Islands; Antigua; Barbados; and Dominica, after the Federal Aviation Administration lifted airspace restrictions that had been in place overnight.

The carrier deployed its largest aircraft, the Boeing 777‑300, on the San Juan‑Miami corridor and added a number of other wide‑body flights to key island destinations, bringing nearly 5,000 additional seats into the market for the first two days after the restrictions were removed.

The restrictions were imposed in response to a U.S. military operation that captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, which caused the FAA to close Caribbean airspace for safety and security reasons. The sudden closure had stranded hundreds of passengers and disrupted schedules across the region.

American Airlines’ recent financial results show a continued focus on debt reduction and free‑cash‑flow generation. The airline reported a GAAP net loss of $114 million in Q3 2025, but the loss was narrower than analysts had expected, and revenue of $13.69 billion matched consensus estimates. Management highlighted strong cost control and a commitment to strengthening the balance sheet, noting that the company has already reduced debt by $15 billion from peak levels and generated $2.2 billion in free cash flow in 2024.

CEO Robert Isom emphasized that the rapid restoration of service demonstrates the airline’s operational resilience and its ability to protect customer experience during regulatory disruptions. He added that the company’s focus on cost discipline, strategic capacity deployment, and loyalty‑program initiatives positions it well for continued growth in the post‑pandemic travel environment.
