AECOM, in partnership with the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI), today launched the SMI Nature Risk Tool at NYC Climate Week 2024. This first-of-its-kind tool is designed to revolutionize how infrastructure projects are planned, financed, and delivered in response to nature and biodiversity impacts.
The AI-powered tool assesses the environmental impact of new infrastructure developments at early stages, collating complex data from diverse open sources. It aims to reduce the time required for risk assessments from weeks to hours, helping to future-proof projects and avoid costly delays.
This technological advancement supports users in meeting regulatory and investor expectations for nature-related financial disclosures. The tool's pilot phase commenced in June with organizations including Shell, BP, KPMG, WWF, Barclays, and Acciona, informing its final version now available to SMI members.
