ADTRAN and Netomnia announced on May 22, 2025, a major milestone in the UK’s broadband market with the first-ever commercial deployment of a 50G PON service. Netomnia utilized ADTRAN’s SDX 6400 Series to upgrade an existing residential customer with an ultra-high-speed service. This deployment is the first of its kind in the UK, providing real-world insight into how providers can leverage next-generation PON technology to meet growing demand for ultra-high-speed connectivity. The flexibility of ADTRAN’s SDX 6400 Series enabled Netomnia to easily deploy the service alongside existing PON technologies without interruption. Netomnia, the UK’s second-largest alternative network provider, now serves 2.4 million premises and aims to reach five million serviceable premises by 2027, backed by £1.5 billion in funding. The SDX 6400 Series, a modular, software-defined OLT platform, supports ultra-high-capacity services while coexisting with deployed PON networks, demonstrating its capability for future residential, enterprise, and mobile transport applications.
