Amprius Technologies announced that Tom Stepien will become chief executive officer effective January 1, 2026, succeeding founder Dr. Kang Sun, who will retire on December 31, 2025 and remain on the board as an Executive Advisor.
Dr. Sun’s transition preserves continuity for the company’s silicon‑anode battery business, while Stepien’s appointment signals a focus on scaling production and accelerating the commercial rollout of the SiCore platform for aerospace and electric‑vehicle markets.
Stepien, who was named president on May 1, 2025, brings a track record of leading technology and battery companies, having served as CEO of South 8 Technologies and Primus Power. During his presidency he expanded customer engagement and streamlined operations, positioning Amprius to convert its development‑stage technology into a revenue‑generating product line.
In the most recent quarter, Amprius reported revenue of $21.4 million, beating the consensus estimate of $17.15 million. Earnings per share were –$0.03 versus an expected –$0.06, a beat driven by higher sales of the SiCore platform and a shift toward higher‑margin product contracts. Gross margin improved to 15% from a negative 21% in Q4 2024, reflecting the company’s move from development services to product sales and the scaling of its contract‑manufacturing model. The company closed the quarter with $55.2 million in cash and no debt, underscoring its strong liquidity position.
Amprius is accelerating the commercial deployment of its SiCore platform, which has already secured a record $35 million re‑order from a key aerospace customer. The platform’s high‑energy‑density silicon‑anode chemistry is expected to drive demand in both aviation and electric‑vehicle segments, providing a tailwind for revenue growth and margin expansion as the company moves beyond prototype development.
"We are proud of the progress we have made in advancing silicon‑anode technology," said Dr. Sun. "I look forward to supporting Amprius in its next phase of growth as an Executive Advisor," he added. Stepien expressed honor at taking the helm, noting that his experience in battery and technology companies will help the company “lead the next phase of commercialization and scale production to meet growing demand.”
