Ameresco, Inc. (NYSE: AMRC) announced today the commercial operation of a 50 MW/200 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at Nucor’s Kingman, Arizona plant. The system, the largest behind‑the‑meter installation in Arizona and the fourth largest in the United States, consists of 58 Tesla Megapack 2XL units and is covered by a 20‑year Storage Services Agreement with Arizona Electric Power Cooperative.

The BESS was developed to support Nucor’s expansion of its bar mill, which will add a new electric arc furnace and increase production capacity to 600,000 tons annually. By smoothing the plant’s energy demand, the battery system reduces strain on the grid, enhances reliability, and facilitates higher renewable energy penetration at the site.

Ameresco’s deployment of this large‑scale battery asset underscores its capability to deliver integrated energy solutions for industrial customers and expands its portfolio of revenue‑generating storage projects. The project also positions Ameresco to capture future opportunities in the growing behind‑the‑meter storage market, where demand is expected to accelerate as utilities and manufacturers seek grid‑stabilizing technologies.
