On October 18, 2024, Ameresco, Inc., in partnership with the U.S. Navy and Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO), announced that its Pu`uloa Microgrid project was selected for the Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships (GRIP) Program. This program was established by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and is administered by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Grid Deployment Office. The Pu`uloa Microgrid is designed with a planned 99 MW firm capacity renewable dispatchable generation resource at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam (JBPHH). It will integrate smart grid technology and new electrical infrastructure to enhance energy resilience and reliability for JBPHH and the island of Oahu. This project aims to improve generation mix diversity and grid reliability, while also creating jobs. The microgrid will supply clean power to the Oahu grid during normal conditions and provide backup power for national security needs during outages, including black start capabilities.
