A federal judge ruled on May 2, 2025, that former Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Michael Jeffries is not competent to stand trial on sex trafficking charges and ordered him hospitalized. The judge directed the Attorney General's office to place Jeffries in a hospital for up to four months to determine if his mental condition improves. This decision followed requests from both defense and prosecution, who cited medical evaluations indicating Jeffries suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body dementia, and traumatic brain injury effects. Jeffries' lawyers had previously stated that his cognitive issues are "progressive and incurable" and that he would not regain competency. The court found by a preponderance of the evidence that Jeffries is unable to understand the nature and consequences of the proceedings or assist in his defense. Jeffries has been out on a $10 million bond since pleading not guilty in October to federal charges of sex trafficking and interstate prostitution. The charges allege he, his romantic partner, and a third man used promises of modeling jobs to lure men to drug-fueled sex parties.
