ASML's High NA EUV machine, priced at over $400 million, has been revealed as the world's most advanced and expensive chipmaking tool. This colossus, larger than a double-decker bus, is assembled from four modules manufactured across different countries before final testing in the Netherlands. The world's first commercial installation of a High NA system occurred at Intel's Oregon chip fabrication plant in 2024. Intel has reported positive results, having used High NA to make approximately 30,000 wafers and noting the machine is about twice as reliable as its predecessors. Samsung also provided positive feedback, stating that High NA could reduce its cycle time by 60% in some use cases. This technology offers a resolution of 8 nanometers, representing a nearly 3x improvement in transistor density per exposure compared to Low NA systems, enabling future advanced nodes like 1.4 nanometer.
