Axon's Draft One, an artificial intelligence tool designed to generate police narratives from body camera audio, is currently being piloted by 75 officers across several U.S. police departments. These include Fort Collins, Colorado; Lafayette, Indiana; and East Palo Alto, California. The tool is presently restricted to drafting reports for minor incidents.
Early feedback from these pilot programs indicates that Draft One reduces report-writing time by more than 60%, potentially cutting the average time for report completion from 23 minutes to just 8 minutes. This translates to an estimated saving of about 45 hours per police officer per month, according to Sergeant Robert Younger of the Fort Collins Police Department. The draft reports are produced in under 10 seconds and are described as accurate, well-written, and chronologically ordered based on facts.
Axon has incorporated safeguards into Draft One, requiring officers to review and sign off on each report before submission. The system also includes controls such as placeholders for key information that officers must edit, ensuring no critical details are missed. Beyond officer review, reports undergo multiple levels of human oversight by supervisors and report clerks to meet agency standards before finalization.
