Constl, a digital‑infrastructure subsidiary of Space World Group, completed a 1 Tbps optical link on the 1,450 km Mumbai–Chennai corridor using Ciena’s WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) coherent‑optics platform. The link operates on a single wavelength and does not require any intermediate regeneration, a first for a line rate of this magnitude over such a distance.

The deployment demonstrates WL6e’s ability to deliver ultra‑high capacity over long distances, a capability that is critical for data‑center interconnects and high‑traffic backbone networks. By eliminating regeneration, Constl can reduce infrastructure costs, lower power consumption, and improve network reliability, giving it a competitive edge in a market where AI workloads and hyperscaler traffic are driving demand for high‑capacity, low‑latency links.

Ciena’s recent earnings show that the company is navigating a challenging margin environment while still expanding its high‑performance optics portfolio. In Q3 2025, Ciena reported revenue that beat estimates but posted an EPS miss, largely due to margin compression in legacy segments. The Mumbai–Chennai deployment signals that the company’s flagship WL6e technology is delivering the performance and cost advantages that investors and customers are seeking, reinforcing Ciena’s position as a leader in the AI‑driven infrastructure market.

Constl’s founder and chairman, Ankit Goel, said the milestone “positions us to expand our terrestrial fibre network and deliver high‑capacity 800 GbE services for the AI era.” Ciena’s Vice President for Asia Pacific, Amit Malik, added that the partnership “demonstrates the best‑in‑class performance of our coherent optics for hyperscaler requirements and supports India’s digital future.”

The 1 Tbps link is part of Constl’s broader strategy to connect over 100 data centers across 13 Indian cities. With more than 12,000 km of fibre already deployed, the new WL6e link expands the company’s capacity to meet the growing bandwidth needs of cloud providers, telecom operators, and enterprise customers in a rapidly digitizing economy.

The deployment also highlights the broader trend of optical technology enabling AI workloads. As data centers demand higher bandwidth to support machine‑learning models, solutions that combine high spectral efficiency with low power consumption become essential. WL6e’s 1.6 Tb/s per wavelength capability and 800 GbE connectivity make it well‑suited for these use cases, positioning both Constl and Ciena to capture a larger share of the high‑capacity market.

Overall, the successful 1 Tbps link underscores the strategic importance of advanced coherent optics in India’s expanding digital infrastructure and signals that Constl and Ciena are well‑placed to capitalize on the AI‑driven demand for high‑capacity, long‑haul connectivity.
