Cummins Inc. and Komatsu Ltd. have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on the development of hybrid powertrains for surface haulage heavy mining equipment. This partnership extends their long-standing relationship in the mining sector. The joint development effort will leverage Cummins’ acquisition of First Mode assets in February 2025, which brought critical capabilities in hybrid development. Pilot units are expected to deploy this year, with expectations of achieving double-digit fuel savings in mining operations. Hybrid solutions offer fuel savings by capturing braking energy and provide productivity improvements through faster cycle times. This collaboration is a significant step in advancing practical decarbonization solutions for the mining industry, supporting both companies' sustainability goals and lowering operating costs for customers.
