On October 17, 2024, the Surface Transportation Board (STB) approved applications from Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) and CSX Corporation regarding their acquisition of rail lines. This approval facilitates the creation of a new direct Class I-to-Class I interchange connection in Alabama, a strategic move for both railway operators.
Under the approved transaction, CPKC will acquire and operate a 52-mile segment between Meridian, Mississippi, and Myrtlewood, Alabama, previously owned by Genesee & Wyoming Inc.'s Meridian & Bigbee Railroad. CSX will operate the lines east of Myrtlewood, establishing a seamless connection.
This new east-west Class I corridor is designed to connect shippers in Mexico, Texas, and the U.S. Southeast, offering new competitive rail services. The initiative is expected to enhance efficiency and provide expanded market access for automotive, intermodal, and carload customers, with the STB approval becoming effective on November 16, 2024.
