Ginkgo Bioworks announced on January 23, 2025, that Ginkgo Automation will design and deploy a flexible, anaerobic-enabled laboratory automation system for the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC). GLBRC is a U.S. Department of Energy-funded Bioenergy Research Center at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
This new system is designed to support diverse research needs of multiple investigators simultaneously, enabling GLBRC scientists to more efficiently discover and optimize the synthesis of biofuels and bioproducts from plant biomass. The automation aims to increase 'walkaway' time for researchers, allowing them to focus on data interpretation and experimental design.
Ginkgo Automation's capabilities, built on years of internal expertise, include hardware design, software integration, and applications development, with significant experience in automating workflows for anaerobic organisms. The deployment will also include Catalyst Flow, a remote error resolution and troubleshooting support service, expected to resolve 80-90% of system errors remotely.
