S&P Dow Jones Indices announced on November 1, 2024, that Dow Inc. will be removed from the Dow Jones Industrial Average. This change is scheduled to take effect prior to the open of trading on Friday, November 8, 2024. Sherwin-Williams, a paint-maker, will replace Dow Inc. in the blue-chip index.

The decision was initiated to ensure a more representative exposure to the materials sector within the index. Dow Inc. was noted as the smallest company on the Dow in terms of market capitalization. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is a price-weighted index, meaning a stock's significance is based on its price rather than the company's total market value.

This marks a notable shift in the composition of the 30-stock average, which is widely regarded as a key barometer of the U.S. economy. The change reflects evolving industry dynamics and the index committee's efforts to maintain relevance and sector representation.
