Dow Inc., in collaboration with JLR and Adient, announced on November 27, 2024, a significant technical breakthrough in the closed-loop recycling of polyurethane seat foam for automotive production. This marks the first time closed-loop seat foam content has been successfully reintegrated into the manufacturing of new automotive seats. The innovation is a key component of Dow's MobilityScience™ material innovations.

The recycled foam is part of a new 'circular seat' concept that is estimated to halve CO2e emissions impact, avoiding over 44kg of CO2e per seat. This is equivalent to charging almost three thousand smartphones. JLR is now progressing the material through its full production process, with plans to test its use at scale in pre-production vehicles early next year.

This development leverages Dow's RENUVA™ sustainability program, which focuses on converting end-of-life waste into new raw circular materials. The collaboration underscores a collective commitment to transforming sustainable mobility by developing technologies that support net-zero carbon emissions and circular solutions goals.
