Electronic Arts today announced a paid expansion for its EA SPORTS F1 25 title that will add the full 2026 FIA Formula One World Championship season, complete with new drivers, teams, circuits and updated physics. The expansion will be available on the same platform that delivered F1 25, allowing players to experience the entire 2026 season without purchasing a new game.
The expansion will be released in 2026, but EA has not yet disclosed a launch date or price. The company said the expansion will be priced competitively with its previous add‑ons, and the timing will be announced next year. The move to a paid expansion model follows the success of F1 25, which launched on May 30, 2025, and has already driven strong net‑booking growth in Q1 FY26.
In addition to the expansion, EA revealed plans for a brand‑new EA SPORTS F1 game scheduled for release in 2027. Codemasters, the long‑time developer, will lead the project with support from other EA Sports teams. The new title will build on the existing engine but will introduce deeper realism, new gameplay mechanics, and tighter integration with the F1 The Movie franchise. EA’s strategy is to shift from an annual release cycle to a model that delivers a major expansion followed by a flagship title, aiming to capture the growing F1 fan base and extend the franchise’s lifecycle.
The announcement comes at a time when EA’s overall financial performance is strong. Q4 FY25 net bookings reached $1.80 billion, exceeding analyst expectations, and the company is guiding FY26 net bookings between $7.60 billion and $8.00 billion. F1 25’s success—highlighted by a 10% increase in net bookings year‑over‑year—provides a solid foundation for the expansion and the 2027 game. The shift to a less frequent release schedule is intended to mitigate the sales decline seen in F1 24 and F1 23, while still capitalizing on the momentum of the sport.
Industry analysts note that Formula 1’s popularity is rising, with more than a third of fans having joined the sport in the last four years. EA’s commitment to a 2027 release signals confidence that the IP will continue to grow. However, the company must navigate competitive pressures from other racing titles and the risk that the expansion model may not generate the same level of revenue as a full new game. Codemasters’ continued leadership and EA’s investment in the franchise suggest that the company is prepared to address these challenges.
Senior Creative Director Lee Mather of Codemasters said, “F1 25 has been an incredible success, fueled by the passion of fans and the energy of the sport. With Formula 1’s momentum on and off the track, now is the perfect time for us to look ahead and build for the future. We’re fully committed to the EA Sports F1 franchise.” The statement underscores EA’s belief that the expansion and 2027 game will strengthen the brand and deliver long‑term value to players and investors.
