Con Edison and First Student have launched an innovative demonstration project in Brooklyn, deploying a smart energy hub to support the electrification of school buses. This initiative aims to reduce emissions and noise pollution while advancing climate change efforts in the community. The project introduces a scalable and cost-optimized solution to address economic barriers for medium and heavy-duty fleet electrification.
The project includes a fleet of 12 electric school buses for Brooklyn schools, which will replace diesel buses at First Student's Malta Street location. These electric buses will be equipped with solar panels, complementing solar arrays on the facility's rooftop to create a unique energy generation, battery storage, and power delivery system. This Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technology allows for electricity delivery where it is most needed, going beyond traditional vehicle-to-grid capabilities.
The smart energy hub is designed to boost local grids, store and generate clean energy, and deliver power during peak demand or emergencies, potentially saving costs for ratepayers. First Student's 'First Charge' solution, a trenchless power deployment approach, reduces construction costs by at least 30% and enables more efficient and flexible system upgrades for future deployments. Con Edison views this partnership as a critical investment in clean energy, aiming for a higher quality of life for New Yorkers.
