Electra Battery Materials and Positive Materials Sign Supply‑Chain Cooperation Agreement to Expand Cobalt Sulfate Supply

Electra Battery Materials and Positive Materials have entered into a supply‑chain cooperation agreement that aligns product specifications and supports downstream processing for battery‑grade cobalt sulfate, creating a joint North American commercial and technical relationship.

Electra’s cobalt sulfate refinery, the only one of its kind in North America, is designed to produce 6,500 tonnes of battery‑grade cobalt annually—enough to supply roughly one million electric‑vehicle batteries. The refinery’s construction was reactivated in November 2025 after an $82 million financing package, which includes U.S. Department of Defense, Canadian, and Ontario government support. Electra already has an offtake agreement with LG Energy Solution, and the new partnership with Positive Materials is intended to broaden its customer base.

Positive Materials is developing a precursor cathode active material (pCAM) manufacturing facility in Belledune, New Brunswick, slated for late 2028. The project uses licensed technology from Kansai Catalyst and is a joint venture with the Pabineau First Nation and Ugpi'Ganjig First Nation.

Strategically, the agreement positions Electra to leverage Positive’s planned pCAM operations, potentially creating a closed‑loop supply chain that enhances traceability and sustainability for end‑users. By expanding beyond its existing LG offtake, Electra can accelerate refinery commissioning and open new revenue streams once the refinery becomes operational.

Electra has faced significant losses and has not generated revenue in prior periods, but the recent financing and government support aim to fund the refinery’s completion. Positive Materials’ financial details are not publicly disclosed, and the specific commercial and technical terms of the cooperation agreement have not been released.
