The Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) new Human Foods Program is finalizing proposed enhancements for postmarket assessments of chemicals in food, a move that follows increased scrutiny of food ingredients and related legislative actions. The FDA released a discussion paper on September 25, 2024, outlining a systematic review process and inviting feedback from the food manufacturing industry until December 6, 2024. These proposed processes are applicable to food and color additives, substances in food contact materials, Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) substances, and unintentionally present chemicals. The FDA's framework includes both Focused Assessments, estimated to be completed within 4 months to 1 year, and more complex Comprehensive Assessments that may take years. This regulatory evolution creates a demand for expert guidance in navigating new safety assessment requirements and ensuring product compliance. Exponent's environmental and health segment is well-positioned to assist food manufacturing stakeholders with these intricate chemical assessments and regulatory challenges.
