The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) is seeking stakeholder feedback on a new set of proposed rules to update regulations for liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities. These regulations, last updated in 2004, aim to streamline operations and facilitate the construction of new LNG infrastructure across the U.S.
The Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM), announced on April 29, 2025, seeks to revise regulations around key areas of LNG production, storage, and transport. This comes as U.S. LNG exports are surging, with over 34.6 million metric tons exported in the first four months of 2025, primarily to Europe.
With five LNG export projects currently under construction and North America's export capacity projected to more than double by 2028, these updates are critical for the industry. Exponent's expertise in engineering, process safety, and risk management positions it to assist LNG industry stakeholders in reviewing the proposed regulations and optimizing their operations for safety and efficiency.
