Freeport-McMoRan reported on September 8, 2025, a significant incident at its Grasberg Block Cave underground mine in Central Papua, Indonesia. A large flow of wet material from a production drawpoint occurred at approximately 10 p.m. local time, impacting one of the five production blocks.

The mudslide blocked access to certain areas within the mine, restricting evacuation routes for seven team members who were engaged in mine development activities. Their location is known, and they are believed to be safe, with crews working to clear the area for their evacuation.

As a direct response to prioritize the safe evacuation of the trapped workers, mining operations across the entire Grasberg minerals district have been temporarily suspended. This halt in production at one of the world's largest copper and gold deposits is expected to have immediate operational impacts.
