FedEx Canada is facing accusations from Teamsters Local Union 362 of attempting to deny basic union rights to immigrant workers, including international students and temporary foreign workers, at its Fort McMurray facility. The Teamsters are vigorously challenging this position before the Canada Industrial Relations Board. The union claims that FedEx employees earn approximately $3 less per hour than their counterparts at UPS and Purolator and are required to contribute 3% of their wages to their pensions, unlike the fully employer-funded pensions at rival companies. Additionally, workers are reportedly expected to lift heavy packages alone, a task that would require assistance at competitors. This dispute involves 31 out of 52 workers at the Fort McMurray facility who are temporary foreign workers or international students, a demographic often more vulnerable in the workplace. The Teamsters assert that regardless of immigration status, all workers deserve fair treatment and the right to union representation, potentially leading to increased scrutiny and labor challenges for FedEx Canada.
