Fluor Corporation secured a front‑end engineering and design contract for Project Speedbird, a sustainable aviation fuel hub in North Yorkshire, England, announced on November 4, 2025.
The joint venture between LanzaJet and British Airways will produce more than 90,000 tonnes (30 million gallons) of SAF and renewable diesel each year, reducing the airline’s CO₂ emissions by approximately 230,000 tonnes annually, equivalent to the emissions from 26,000 domestic flights.
Fluor will recognize the undisclosed contract value in the third quarter of 2025. The company reported Q2 2025 revenue of $3.98 billion, a 5.9% year‑over‑year decline, and earnings per share of $0.43, below analyst expectations of $0.48. The new contract is expected to offset some of the revenue decline and support the company’s shift toward high‑growth sectors.
Fluor operates through three segments—Urban Solutions, Energy Solutions, and Mission Solutions—with Urban Solutions accounting for the largest share of revenue. The SAF contract aligns with Fluor’s “Building a Better Future” strategy, which prioritizes advanced technologies and life sciences, and is part of the company’s broader effort to diversify beyond traditional construction and engineering services.
Project Speedbird has received £9 million from the UK Government’s Advanced Fuels Fund in 2023 and an additional £10 million in 2025, and is supported by investments from British Airways and its parent IAG. The facility will use LanzaJet’s Alcohol‑to‑Jet technology to convert second‑generation ethanol derived from agricultural residues and woody biomass into jet fuel.
The UK government aims to have 10% of jet fuel from sustainable sources by 2030 and to build at least five commercial‑scale SAF facilities by 2025. Project Speedbird, along with other UK hubs such as those by Essar Energy and Exolum, positions the country as a leader in SAF production and supports its net‑zero aviation targets.
Fluor’s Group President, Project Execution, Mike Alexander, highlighted the company’s capability to deliver complex engineering projects and its commitment to expanding into high‑growth sectors.
