US Treasury and FHFA Amend Agreements, Signaling Path to Fannie Mae Privatization

The U.S. Treasury Department and the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) announced on January 3, 2025, that they have amended their agreements with Fannie Mae. These amendments are designed to help ensure that the companies' eventual exit from conservatorship is not disruptive.

The agencies also stated they would solicit public comments before either Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac is released from federal control. This marks a significant milestone for the government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs), which have been under conservatorship since the 2008 financial crisis.

Exiting conservatorship would fundamentally alter Fannie Mae's operating environment and stockholder rights. This move indicates a serious consideration of privatization, which has been a key focus for investors for over a decade.
