Geospace Technologies Corporation announced on August 4, 2025, the acquisition of Heartbeat Detector®, a security technology developed by the United States Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The acquisition, effective July 31, 2025, involved purchasing 100 percent of the outstanding shares from GeoVox Security, Inc., the original licensee and commercializer of the technology.
The Heartbeat Detector® utilizes a proprietary algorithm and sensors, including Geospace's GS-ONE LF single-element geophones, to detect concealed humans in vehicles at security checkpoints. The device has been proven 99% effective by Oak Ridge, Sandia, and Thunder Mountain national laboratories.
This technology is used in over a dozen countries for human trafficking and prison security, with an estimated market size of 10,000 global prison facilities and hundreds of manned border checkpoints. Geospace intends to offer the Heartbeat Detector® on a subscription basis, aligning with its strategy to grow recurring revenue streams within its Intelligent Industrial business segment.
Rich Kelley, CEO of Geospace Technologies, stated that the acquisition responds to market demand for accurate, simple, and portable technology to combat human trafficking and enhance security. This move is part of the company's long-term growth plan to pursue immediately accretive acquisitions for its newly established business segments.
