Lightshift Energy announced on May 22, 2025, plans to construct Vermont’s largest battery energy storage project at GlobalFoundries’ semiconductor manufacturing facility in Essex Junction. The project, which has completed permitting and contracting, is set to begin construction this year and come online in early 2026.
The 16MW/52MWh system will primarily be used for peak shaving, storing electricity during periods of low regional demand and discharging it during peak times. This approach aims to alleviate grid stress, reduce energy costs for GF’s Vermont campus, and improve regional grid resilience.
This initiative represents a forward-thinking approach to integrating battery technology within a large-scale manufacturing facility. It also supports Vermont’s clean energy goals by reducing reliance on fossil fuels, particularly during high-demand periods.
