Grove Collaborative Holdings, Inc. launched a new open-source approach to sustainable AI measurement through an expanded partnership with Gravity, its carbon accounting platform. The company committed to measuring, mitigating, and reporting the environmental impact of its artificial intelligence (AI) adoption.
Grove aims to prove that AI can be a force for good without ignoring its environmental cost, becoming the first retailer to measure its AI-related carbon footprint. The company estimates its projected 2025 AI-related carbon footprint to be 17.8 metric tons of CO2e, which is approximately 6% of its 2024 business travel emissions.
The open-source formula, developed by Gravity, uses compute time, server power, and grid emissions factors to determine AI-related carbon emissions. Grove is sharing this methodology publicly to encourage industry-wide accountability and enable other organizations to track and reduce their environmental impact from AI adoption.
