On Oct. 6, 2025, HII announced that its REMUS 620 unmanned undersea vehicle successfully completed the first torpedo tube recovery and swimout from a Virginia‑class submarine test fixture at Seneca Lake, New York. The test, conducted by a joint team that included Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the U.S. Navy’s Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport, demonstrated the vehicle’s ability to autonomously dock with the shock and fire enclosure capsule (SAFECAP) and perform a reverse swimout launch and safe separation. This milestone validates HII’s investment in the next‑generation REMUS 620 and its integration of WHOI’s Yellow Moray torpedo tube launch and recovery technology. "This successful docking validates the research and development investments and efforts of HII; specifically the REMUS 620 engineers working in close cooperation with our WHOI teammates," said Duane Fotheringham, president of the Unmanned Systems group in HII’s Mission Technologies division. The test was completed less than seven months after the integration of the Yellow Moray technology, underscoring the rapid progress of HII’s unmanned systems program. The achievement also demonstrates the vehicle’s capability to conduct complex autonomous navigation and communication protocols required for submarine‑based deployment. The REMUS 620’s successful recovery and swimout represents a significant operational milestone for HII’s Mission Technologies segment, expanding the company’s portfolio of autonomous undersea solutions for the U.S. Navy. By enabling reliable launch and recovery from submarine torpedo tubes, HII strengthens its position as a key partner in the Navy’s undersea warfare modernization effort. The milestone enhances HII’s competitive advantage in the growing unmanned systems market.
