SunHydrogen, Inc. and CTF Solar GmbH announced on November 18 2025 that they have signed an expanded Memorandum of Understanding to accelerate the pilot production of photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen modules. The agreement builds on earlier collaborations signed in December 2023 and July 2024 and establishes a framework for engineering, pilot manufacturing, and large‑scale module development.
Under the new MoU the companies will produce approximately 1,000 full‑size modules for pilot demonstrations, a critical step toward validating commercial viability. The plan also includes detailed engineering support and a roadmap for scaling the technology from laboratory prototypes to commercial‑grade production lines.
CTF Solar brings two decades of experience in thin‑film cadmium‑telluride photovoltaic manufacturing, while SunHydrogen contributes proprietary catalyst and reactor innovations. By integrating these complementary strengths, the partnership aims to create a cost‑effective, scalable green‑hydrogen platform that can be deployed alongside existing solar manufacturing lines, bringing SunHydrogen closer to market readiness.
SunHydrogen’s pilot plant portfolio supports the MoU’s objectives: a 30 m² pilot in Austin, Texas, and a >25 m² proof‑of‑concept plant whose engineering design was completed in July 2025, with operations targeted for late Q4 2025. The expanded agreement will help bridge the gap between lab‑scale demonstrations and commercial deployment.
The green‑hydrogen market is projected to exceed $1 trillion per year by 2050. By leveraging CTF Solar’s manufacturing expertise, SunHydrogen positions itself to capture a share of this growing market with a cheaper, scalable alternative to traditional electrolysis, while capitalizing on existing solar infrastructure.
CEO Tim Young said, "Together, we are building the foundation for scalable, real‑world hydrogen production using sunlight and water." CTF Solar CEO Bastian Siepchen added, "With SunHydrogen we are lifting our technology to the next level."
