InterDigital obtained a preliminary injunction from the Munich Regional Court on November 3 2025, blocking Disney from using a patented technology that dynamically overlays a first video stream with a second stream, such as subtitles.
The patent, part of InterDigital’s extensive video encoding portfolio, covers a method that allows real‑time overlay of subtitles and other secondary streams onto primary video content. The injunction follows a similar preliminary injunction granted in Brazil earlier this year.
Disney has indicated it will appeal the ruling. The injunction allows InterDigital to seek damages and enforce its rights, strengthening its position in the global enforcement strategy against major content providers.
InterDigital’s Q3 2025 financial results show revenue of $164.7 million, up 28% year‑over‑year, and net income of $67.5 million, up 97% year‑over‑year. Annualized recurring revenue reached $588 million, up 49% year‑over‑year. The company attributes the strong performance to new license agreements and successful enforcement actions, including the Disney case.
The injunction is part of InterDigital’s broader strategy to monetize its 28,000‑plus patent portfolio and to support its high‑margin IP‑as‑a‑service business model. The company also recently acquired Deep Render, an AI startup focused on video codecs, to enhance its AI capabilities.
