Illumina, Inc. announced on March 7, 2025, a renewed commitment to its collaboration with the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC). This partnership aims to advance the Africa Pathogen Genomics Initiative (Africa PGI) by enhancing public health surveillance and laboratory networks across the continent.
The collaboration builds on existing efforts since March 2021 to address infectious disease outbreaks and tackle endemic diseases like tuberculosis, malaria, and cholera. Illumina will provide additional next-generation sequencing (NGS) platforms, reagents, and training support to approximately 25 countries.
The overarching goal is to ensure that all 55 National Public Health Institutes (NPHIs) in Africa have operational NGS capacity by the end of 2025. This initiative is expected to enable faster and more effective responses to disease outbreaks, integrating genomics into routine public health surveillance and improving global health outcomes.
