The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) announced on January 17, 2025, that it has laid nine charges against Imperial Oil Resources Limited. These charges are in relation to an industrial wastewater release that occurred at the company's Kearl Oil Sands Processing Plant. The incident, involving a berm overflow, was initially reported to the AER on February 4, 2023.
Six of the charges were laid under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, while the remaining three charges were laid under the Public Lands Act. This multi-charge action by a provincial regulator indicates a serious view of the environmental incident.
Imperial Oil Resources Limited is scheduled for its first court appearance on February 26, 2025, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray. The legal proceedings could result in significant penalties and further operational scrutiny for the Kearl facility.
