Johnson Controls International plc and Nopetro Energy announced a $50 million partnership to design, finance, build and operate a landfill‑gas‑to‑renewable‑natural‑gas (RNG) plant in Manatee County, Florida. The facility will capture methane from the county’s landfill, convert it into RNG, and supply the fuel to local trucks and buses, reducing emissions equivalent to 5.3 million gallons of gasoline and powering more than 4,500 Florida homes each year.

Johnson Controls will lead the early‑stage design and engineering, assess commercial strategies, and provide measurement and verification services throughout the project’s life. Nopetro will own and operate the plant, handling day‑to‑day operations and fuel distribution. The partnership structure is a joint‑venture where Johnson Controls contributes technical expertise and oversight, while Nopetro supplies the operational platform and market access.

Construction is slated to begin in 2026, with commercial operations expected in 2027. The project is projected to create roughly 50 construction jobs and five permanent positions, supporting local employment and strengthening the county’s renewable‑energy portfolio. The RNG output will replace fossil‑fuel diesel for municipal fleets, aligning with Manatee County’s goal to reduce greenhouse‑gas emissions and create a “free revenue source” from landfill gas.

The announcement comes amid Johnson Controls’ strong fiscal performance. In Q4 FY2025, the company reported adjusted earnings per share of $1.26 on revenue of $6.44 billion, a 3 % year‑over‑year increase. Full‑year FY2025 adjusted EPS rose to $3.76, and the company raised its FY2026 guidance to an adjusted EPS of approximately $4.55, reflecting confidence in continued growth in data‑center cooling and decarbonization solutions. The RNG project dovetails with Johnson Controls’ sustainability strategy, reinforcing its commitment to smart, healthy, and sustainable buildings and expanding its footprint in the renewable‑fuel market.

The partnership underscores Johnson Controls’ broader shift toward high‑growth, high‑margin sectors. By leveraging its expertise in thermal management and digital solutions, the company is positioning itself to capture opportunities in AI‑driven data centers and decarbonization projects, while the RNG facility adds a new revenue stream and demonstrates tangible progress toward its decarbonization targets.
