Kyndryl Holdings and Wayne State University announced a multi‑year partnership to create the IntelliMake research hub and pilot‑scale factory in Detroit. The facility will be housed in the university’s James and Patricia Anderson College of Engineering and will serve as a living laboratory for agentic AI, digital twins, and cybersecurity solutions in manufacturing.
The collaboration will host joint workshops on AI, cybersecurity and digital twins, and will build demonstration pods that showcase real‑world solutions. Kyndryl will deploy its Kyndryl Bridge platform to monitor and manage the infrastructure that powers the mock assembly line, providing end‑to‑end visibility and automation for the pilot factory.
Kyndryl’s strategic focus on higher‑margin AI and digital‑transformation services is reflected in the IntelliMake initiative. The company’s recent earnings show a 17.65% year‑over‑year increase in EPS to $0.60, driven by strong demand for its consulting and cloud‑migration services. Adjusted EBITDA margins expanded to 16.7% in FY25, a result of a higher mix of high‑margin AI contracts and disciplined cost control.
Onofrio Pirrotta, SVP & Managing Director at Kyndryl, said the partnership “will replace brittle, fixed automation with resilient, people‑centered innovation.” CEO Martin Schroeter added that the initiative “demonstrates Kyndryl’s commitment to delivering AI‑powered solutions that accelerate productivity while addressing workforce readiness gaps highlighted in the company’s 2025 Readiness Report.”
The IntelliMake hub also addresses the workforce readiness gap identified in Kyndryl’s 2025 Readiness Report, where 87% of leaders expect AI to reshape jobs but only 29% feel their workforce is ready. By providing hands‑on training and real‑world demonstrations, the partnership aims to equip the Detroit manufacturing workforce with the skills needed for AI‑driven environments.
The collaboration positions both Kyndryl and Wayne State University as leaders in smart manufacturing innovation in the Detroit region and beyond, reinforcing Kyndryl’s strategy to shift from legacy infrastructure contracts to value‑added AI and consulting services.
