Luminar announced on March 5, 2025, that its LiDAR technology will be equipped in the new Volvo ES90, a fully electric model slated for production in 2025. This marks the second Volvo car model to feature Luminar's technology, following the successful launch of the Volvo EX90 SUV. The Volvo ES90 will utilize Luminar's Iris LiDAR, seamlessly integrated into the roofline of the vehicle, as part of the SPA2 platform. This expansion of the partnership underscores Volvo Cars' commitment to safety and endorses Luminar's leadership in LiDAR technology and its ability to industrialize at scale. The integration of LiDAR on the ES90 is expected to complement other advanced sensors, enhancing perception for improved safety by detecting objects like pedestrians at up to 250 meters and small, dark objects at 120 meters, even at highway speeds and in low-light conditions. This move is anticipated to scale Luminar's safety-critical technology and expose a new category of car buyers to advanced sensing capabilities.
