Comstock Inc.'s wholly-owned subsidiary, Comstock IP Holdings LLC, executed an Exclusive License Agreement (ELA) and a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). This collaboration involves technologies developed by NREL and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for converting lignocellulosic biomass into aromatic sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The partnership aims to enhance Comstock Fuels' existing refining solutions, which already produce market-leading yields of renewable fuels.
The NREL technologies have the proven potential to increase bulk biomass conversion yields from Comstock's current 125 gasoline gallon equivalents (GGE) per dry metric ton of feedstock to over 140 GGE. This advancement also focuses on maximizing aromatic content and quality specifically for high-value use in SAF, addressing the global surge in demand for such fuels. The CRADA outlines a three-year scope of work, with Comstock funding research and contributing staff and equipment, including its Wisconsin pilot facility.
The joint effort is anticipated to culminate in the construction of a pre-commercial pilot system to validate the requirements for rapidly scaling up the process into Comstock’s planned 50,000 metric ton per year commercial demonstration facility. The ELA grants Comstock IP Holdings exclusive worldwide rights to use the NREL technologies in processing seed plants for renewable fuels, subject to royalty and other fees linked to sales of licensed products.
