Lumen Technologies announced today a new strategic vision for its internet backbone, titled "Cloud 2.0: Because AI Won’t Run on Yesterday’s Internet." The BusinessWire press release dated October 24, 2025 outlines the company’s plan to overhaul its network architecture to meet the bandwidth, latency, and programmability demands of AI workloads.

The white paper identifies key deficiencies in the current "Cloud 1.0" model, citing the need for 400 G+ speeds and sub‑5 ms latency for AI inference. It calls for programmable networks, massive bandwidth increases, and distributed interconnect and on‑ramp architectures. Lumen expects the transformation to be largely complete by 2028.

The vision targets hyperscalers, enterprises, and public sector organizations, warning that failure to adopt could lead to constrained innovation, delayed AI deployment, higher costs, and security vulnerabilities. Lumen’s Chief Technology & Product Officer Dave Ward emphasized that those who invest in Cloud 2.0 will thrive, while laggards risk being left behind. The full white paper is available for download on Lumen’s website.
