The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced on March 19, 2025, plans to install enhanced safety technology, known as the Runway Incursion Device, at 74 airports across the U.S. by the end of 2026. This system is designed to serve as a memory aid for air traffic controllers, indicating when a runway is occupied. The Runway Incursion Device is currently operational at four airports and will be deployed at an additional 70 airports over the next 19 months. This initiative is part of a broader effort to prevent runway incursions and enhance aviation safety. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy also indicated plans to announce an overhaul of the U.S. air traffic control system in the coming days, aiming to replace aging technologies. These measures collectively address critical safety concerns within the national airspace system.
