Southwest Airlines announced on December 20, 2024, a contract worth over 25 million euros with Leonardo to implement cross-belt sorter technology (MBHS) at Denver International Airport's transfer bags facility. This investment aims to modernize its largest operation and enhance efficiency.
The new system is designed to drastically reduce baggage mishandlings, optimize connection times, and increase capacity to handle future passenger volume growth. It will serve 94 destinations from Denver, a major airline hub.
According to Andrew Watterson, Southwest's Chief Operations Officer, this technology will provide key efficiencies for employees and customers, contributing to improved aircraft turnaround times and overall passenger travel experience by eliminating delays and mis-sortation.
