A U.S. District Judge in Dallas ruled on December 6, 2024, that Southwest Airlines must face a lawsuit alleging racial discrimination. The lawsuit, filed by Edward Blum's American Alliance for Equal Rights, targets the airline's now-defunct '¡Lánzate!' program. The program, which ran for 20 years, awarded free flights to Hispanic college students. The lawsuit claims that the program discriminated against white and Asian students, and the judge's decision allows these claims to proceed. Southwest's elimination of the program and an offer to pay one cent in damages did not render the claims moot. This legal challenge could have implications for the company's diversity initiatives and public image.
