Mastercard and PayPal have expanded their partnership to integrate Mastercard’s Agent Pay platform into PayPal’s wallet, enabling AI‑driven checkout experiences for consumers and merchants.
The integration uses agentic token technology that links a consumer’s card to a cryptographically secure token controlled by an AI agent, allowing the agent to complete transactions on the consumer’s behalf while maintaining tokenization and fraud‑detection safeguards.
PayPal will pilot the Mastercard Agent Pay Acceptance Framework with selected merchants during the 2025 holiday shopping season, co‑developing and testing the framework to ensure compatibility and interoperability. The pilot will involve AI agents that can browse product catalogs, add items to carts, and finalize payments without human intervention.
The partnership builds on a long‑standing collaboration between the two companies and positions both firms at the forefront of agentic commerce, a trend that also sees competitors such as Visa and Stripe exploring similar AI‑enabled payment solutions.
