Mattel announced on June 4, 2025, that acclaimed filmmaker Gerard Johnstone, known for directing 'M3GAN,' is set to direct a live-action theatrical film based on its 'Monster High' franchise. The movie is being developed in partnership with Universal Pictures and Academy Award-winning filmmaker Akiva Goldsman's Weed Road.

The film will feature an original story reimagining Mattel’s fashion dolls as the children of legendary monsters. Robbie Brenner, President and Chief Content Officer of Mattel Studios, stated that Johnstone's unique vision and genre-blending style make him a perfect fit for the project.

This development is part of Mattel Studios' strategy to collaborate with top talent to tell fresh, unexpected stories from its rich portfolio of brands.
