Microchip Technology today introduced the JANPTX family of non‑hermetic plastic Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) devices, the first discrete components in the industry to meet the MIL‑PRF‑19500 military qualification in a plastic package. The launch expands the company’s aerospace and defense portfolio with a lightweight, cost‑effective solution that protects critical systems from lightning, electrostatic discharge and electromagnetic pulse events.
The JANPTX line covers voltage ranges from 5 V to 175 V and includes six variants: JANPTX1N5555UJ, JANPTX1N5558UG, JANPTX1N5629AUJ, JANPTX1N5665AUG, JANPTX1N5907UG, and JANPTX1N5907UJ. Each device delivers a peak pulse power rating of 1.5 kW, a clamping response time of under 100 picoseconds, and a weight of approximately 0.25 grams. The devices meet MIL‑PRF‑19500/716 as well as IEC 61000‑4‑2, IEC 61000‑4‑4 and IEC 61000‑4‑5 standards.
By offering the first MIL‑PRF‑19500‑qualified plastic TVS devices, Microchip gives engineers a new option that reduces weight and cost without compromising reliability. In aerospace and defense applications, where every gram matters, the plastic package can lower system mass and simplify assembly compared to traditional hermetic packages. The move also positions Microchip to capture a larger share of the transient protection market, where demand is growing as systems become more complex and power‑dense.
Associate director of Microchip’s high‑reliability and RF business unit, Ronan Dillon, said the launch “enables engineers to achieve high reliability and performance in a lightweight, cost‑effective package.” The company’s broader strategy of delivering high‑reliability solutions for demanding environments is reinforced by this product, which aligns with its focus on aerospace, defense and industrial markets.
The introduction of the JANPTX family is expected to strengthen Microchip’s competitive stance in the defense electronics space. While the company has not yet reported financial impact from the launch, the new devices are positioned to drive future revenue growth in the aerospace and defense segment, where the demand for lightweight, high‑performance protection components is increasing.
