Mercer Timber Products recently completed a four-week test of a 16-tonne electric forklift truck from Kalmar Germany GmbH at its Friesau sawmill. The test aimed to evaluate the performance and practicality of the latest lithium-ion technology under real-world operating conditions.

The electric forklift demonstrated impressive performance, operating for eight hours on a single charge with a battery capacity of up to 230 kWh. New charging infrastructure, with points up to 300 kW, allowed for rapid charging from 30% to 80% in just 30 minutes, enhancing operational flexibility for multi-shift operations.

Based on the positive results, Mercer Timber Products has scheduled the purchase of its first electric forklift for 2025 and is building the necessary charging infrastructure. The long-term goal is to replace all diesel forklifts with zero-emission alternatives, marking a significant step in Mercer's sustainability strategy to protect the climate and increase logistics efficiency.
