Markel Insurance announced on November 13 2025 that its new Storage Tank Liability (STL) insurance product is now available through its digital platform, Markel Connect, in the Canadian market, with the initial launch excluding Quebec.

The STL policy protects third‑party claims arising from environmental hazards associated with both above‑ground and underground storage tanks. It targets businesses such as auto garages, gas stations, campgrounds, golf courses and commercial properties. Minimum premiums start at CAD $500 for a CAD $1 million limit, with coverage up to CAD $5 million, and include bodily injury, property damage, cleanup costs, civil fines and crisis‑management expenses.

Through Markel Connect, brokers can quote, bind and issue STL policies 24/7, receive instant decline notifications and benefit from rapid referral turnaround. The product offers flexible options, competitive rates, no policy fees and a generous 25 % commission, enhancing broker incentives and accelerating market penetration.

The launch underscores Markel’s broader digital‑transformation strategy and its focus on niche environmental liability markets. By delivering a specialized product through an online platform, the company positions itself to capture a growing segment of Canadian businesses that face regulatory pressure to insure storage tanks, while differentiating itself from competitors such as Totten Group and Liberty Mutual. The move also adds a new revenue stream to Markel’s specialty‑insurance portfolio, supporting the firm’s long‑term growth objectives.

"Our new STL product is a direct response to the evolving needs of Canadian businesses and brokers," said Sarah Martin, Vice President and Product Line Leader of Environmental Liability at Markel Canada. "We have designed this solution to be both robust and accessible, ensuring that clients with storage tank exposures can secure the protection they need quickly and confidently."

"Markel Connect is built to empower brokers with the tools they need to deliver fast, efficient, and tailored insurance solutions," added Sachin Rustagi, Head of Digital at Markel Canada. "This launch is another step forward in our digital journey, combining product innovation with digital accessibility."
