Microsoft has expanded its quantum research footprint just outside Copenhagen by adding a second laboratory to its Lyngby campus, creating the world’s largest quantum facility. The new lab will house advanced research on the Majorana 1 chip, a key component designed to reduce quantum computing errors and bring practical, scalable quantum processors closer to reality.
The expansion comes with an investment of more than 1 billion Danish crowns—approximately $156 million—underscoring Microsoft’s commitment to deep‑physics research and manufacturable quantum technology. The second lab will support the development of the Magne quantum computer, a partnership with Denmark’s Novo Nordisk Foundation and EIFO that aims to build a machine with roughly 50 logical qubits and over 1,200 physical qubits.
Strategically, the new facility positions Microsoft as a leading quantum hub in Europe and strengthens its Azure Quantum cloud platform. By integrating cutting‑edge hardware research with cloud services, Microsoft can accelerate the deployment of quantum‑enhanced AI workloads and secure‑communications solutions for its global customer base.
Microsoft’s executive vice‑president Jason Zander emphasized the practical impact of the expansion: “With this expansion of the Lyngby lab, we are converting deep physics into manufacturable technology, while reinforcing our commitment to Denmark and to Europe, advancing transatlantic collaboration.” The statement highlights the company’s focus on turning fundamental research into commercial products.
The move also signals Microsoft’s intent to stay ahead in the intensifying global quantum race, where competitors such as Google and IBM are investing heavily. By establishing the largest quantum site in Europe, Microsoft deepens its regional partnerships and demonstrates its long‑term vision for quantum computing as a cornerstone of future cloud and AI services.
