Micron Technology announced it has begun qualification of its 6550 ION NVMe™ SSD with customers, marking a significant advancement in data center storage. The Micron 6550 ION is touted as the world’s fastest 60TB data center SSD and the industry’s first E3.S and PCIe Gen5 60TB SSD, setting new benchmarks for performance and energy efficiency.
The new drive delivers a remarkable 12GB/s while consuming just 20 watts of power, offering up to 20% better energy efficiency than competing drives. It also provides up to 147% higher random read performance and 20% better energy efficiency in AI training workloads, making it ideal for high-capacity NVMe workloads such as AI data lakes and analytic databases.
Available in E3.S, U.2, and E1.L form factors, the 6550 ION offers best-in-class density, potentially reducing rack storage needs by up to 67%. This innovation, built with Micron's G8 NAND, enhances rack density and operational efficiency for hyperscale data center deployments, further solidifying Micron's competitive edge in the AI infrastructure market.
